Poor transportation secretary Ray LaHood: he should know better.
Elected officials and their staff sometimes forget the first rule of politics: you never tell the truth. You tell people what they want to hear, especially when it comes to dealing with business. When Mr. LaHood blurted out that people should just stop driving their Toyotas, do you think he got a Scooby snack? No, he had to rush and backtrack on his own statement, something he probably believed to retreat into the proper world of saying things you don't really believe, i.e., politics.
It almost seems ludricrous that the constituency we don't want to offend the most are businesses. Toyota was quick to pout, although that response was disproptionate to their less-than-stellar actions regarding their cars with "stuck gas pedals" that's resulted in a string of deaths. No, they were fast to complain to the Obama Administration because you know, when you have a product that is responsible for peoples' deaths, that doesn't mean you can hurt the company's feelings.
Just want to make sure we're all clear on that.
